“I'm telling you Jack, if I don't start getting some clients soon, I'm going to have to get into another business. I can almost guarantee that it'll be a business that isn't quite legal. Though, I know you don’t really care about that. I am trying to stay on the right side of the law.”

“You can always come work for me Connor. You know that.”

I waved him off. Yeah, I know. I'm not really looking for that kind of job again. I am trying to stay legal, remember? Besides, you don't need another bodyguard. You already have several.”

“Well, I'll get rid of a couple if you want. It will give you something to do.”

“No, I appreciate it Jack, but I need to find something else.”

“None of your clients need anything right now.”

“No, not that I want to work with.”

  “Like me?”

“Sort of, but I don't have beers with the rest of them.”

Jack took a drink. “Well, I hear that some of those dating services for human women and shifters, they have women that are in need of some protection. Maybe you could check that out and see what you can come up with. You never know.”

“I'm not looking for a date Jack. I am looking for a real job.”

“Some of them are looking for a one-night stand, you know, live life on the wild side and have sex with the beast and all that. I think it's more of a fetish thing than anything else. I don’t know who romanticized having sex with shifters. I don't even honestly know where it started.”

“I think we started it a long time ago, because we liked human women.”

Jack grinned like he was the guilty party that started it all. “Yeah, we do. Whatever the reason is, I can't get enough of them. I hear you know all about them too.”

He was always trying to talk about all of my earlier conquest. I was trying to live a better life, do better things. Sitting here shooting the shit with him, didn’t mess with all of that, but he was my friend. Jack had too much time and money on his hands. He got bored and had to do increasingly more and more to get any kind of satisfaction in life. Going outside of the law was one of his go-to ways of feeling something.

“Most of the time, they just wind up getting me in trouble. I can't say that I’m too happy to deal with them much anymore.”

“Well like I said, my suggestion had nothing to do with you getting a girlfriend. Some of the women on that site don't want to have sex, they just want the protection of a big strong man. We make them feel safe, because we can turn into wild animals and kill things. That's what it really boils down to and that's what you're looking to do for somebody, aren’t you?”

I shrugged like it didn’t matter either way. “I don't go out trying to kill somebody, but if it comes down to it, I guess.”

“Well there you go. You need to check out the site. It has a bunch of ads and you just answer them like you would any other site like that. Think of it as one of those job finding websites. It is pretty much the same thing, but you could find a date on there as well.”

“Still sounds like a dating site to me.”

“I told you that's what it is, but it’s more than that. You have to think outside the box.”

“So what site is it again?”

“I think it's called Dewdrop or something like that, Dewdrop Dating Service. I don't know exactly, put it into the search engine and you’ll find what I’m talking about.”

I was skeptical. The last thing I wanted to do was get involved with a bunch of women. I had worked with several in the past, usually they had a boyfriend that wouldn't let go or something of the like. It didn't bother me to do those type of jobs, it actually made me feel like I was helping. But on the other hand, there was always a time when they would start to get feelings for me. I would have to put them down gently, because I didn't want to hurt their feelings, but I always feel guilty about it. I always felt bad about doing something that I shouldn't be doing anyways.

“I don't know about that Jack. That sounds like a whole lot of drama.”

“I wouldn't say that it's drama, I would just say that it is a different route. You need the money, and they need protection. Would it be so bad to be a big strong man for somebody?”

I just shook my head. Was this what it was coming down to?

“Maybe I should work for you after all.”

“No, you already said that you don't want to. When I get something exciting, I will have you come with me again.”

I agreed that I would. We had met at a job that I did for him years ago and we have been friends ever since. Jack and I were completely different, but we had enough in common that the friendship worked.

He was a loner as well, but his family was panther shifters that came from a lot of money and my family did not. We were more grifters than anything else, and although I knew there were lots of illegal ways to make money, I was doing my best to stay legal. It was a lot harder than I would have imagined it would be. Making legal money was twice as hard as illegal money.

“I'm telling you Connor; you should give it a try. What's the worst that could happen?”

“I get hooked up with some crazy chick to do a job, she gets me killed.”

“Yeah, I guess it could happen. Way to think positively.”

Jack laughed. I wasn't too worried about it, because I didn't have to deal with it. Whatever it was that Jack made money doing, switching money from account to account, playing the stock market, I wasn't really sure. At the end of the day, it didn't really matter to me. I know that he had a lot of shady dealings that called for people like me in his life. There was enough information for me.

I left his house a little while after it started getting dark. I had drove over with him and instead of calling for a ride, I just walked the rest of the way home. It was about twenty blocks and the distance gave me quite a bit of time to think, trying to come up with an answer to my problem. Protection services offers had been running dry lately. I don't know why. Maybe I did need to change things up and pick up women from a personal ad. It just didn't seem like the way to go. It seemed like a desperate sort of thing. Was I really there? I didn’t like to think that I was.

By the time I got home though, there was still not a better idea inside and I started to think that maybe Jack was right. What would I have to lose?

My dignity. That's what I would lose. How was I supposed to look at myself in the mirror, knowing that I was preying on women, that were being preyed on by other men? It didn't seem like it would be all that advisable as something to do. Then again, maybe I could help. I was going back and forth with it, trying to decide what was best. I made some dinner and sat down at the table, my laptop close by.

I was about halfway through the meal, when I opened it up and started it. I put in the address that he had told me, and it came right up. It was definitely a dating site, bringing human and shifters together. It didn't say it outright, but all I had to do is read between the lines to understand what it said. It wasn't that hard of a code to crack.

Once I realized that it was in fact a dating site
and not something else like a job site, I about turned it off. I have been warned that's what it was, but still it felt strange. I felt like I was lying to myself and there was an impending doom of what was going to happen next. Why did it feel like someone on that site was going to change everything?

I smiled and shook my head. That's a bit dramatic isn't it?

I started scanning through some of the ads, but it was almost an hour later before I realized that I had to start my own profile. I couldn't just go on and look at everybody else's profile, no, I had to look at make my own, so that they could search me out too. It made me question if I really wanted to do it, but I muscled through and got it done. Now I was in.

The ads were old style like I’d seen in a personal ad in a newspaper. It was rather strange, and there wasn't a lot of pictures. There was a lot of anonymity because of who everybody was. No one gave real names, or at least I didn't think so. It was rather strange and the mention of it being some kind of fetish site started to make sense. It definitely didn't feel aboveboard.

I didn't see many ads that were looking for protection either. It was usually an offer of sex and favors. Very few said anything about protection. They didn't want protection; they wanted the thrill of being with a shifter. Some of them even had specific genus that they wanted. Dragons, Tigers, the list was amazing, and I couldn't believe that someone had went through and thought it all out in such a way. What would make somebody want to be with a man that turned into a bear? I didn't understand how that worked, and I was about to close up the laptop in frustration, until I saw the first line of the last ad on the page.

  ‘In need of protection.’

It was in bold, and it certainly grabbed my attention.

‘I am in need of protection in a mission that I have. More details will come if interested. Willing to give up virginity if needed for payment. Anna Shelton. 555-5510.’

That was it. I was a bit thrown off by it to be honest. I knew that it was a dating site, and that a lot of people there were in fact looking for one-night stand and a little bit of fun while their significant other was away. This was different though. She was looking for protection and she wanted to pay with her hymen? I guess that would work for some people, but what would make her so desperate that she would be willing to do such a thing? How old was she? It would seem that if she had waited much of any time at all, it would have been a lot more valuable to her than to other women.

I was intrigued. I don't know why. It's not like I was trying to bed a virgin anyways. I wasn't looking for sex. Did that mean that she couldn't pay?

The number was right there, as well as the name. I don't know if either one of them would actually work and there was hope that it wouldn't. Why did I get a bad feeling about this? It wasn't like the impending doom feeling that came when I knew something bad was going to happen, this was something else altogether. This was more like just knowing that it was a big decision I was making. It was one phone call, but I felt like I momentous occasion.

I had to meet this chick.

“Yes hello, is this Anna Shelton?”

  “Yes, it is.”

“Hi, my name is Connor and I own a protection and personal bodyguard service. I came across your ad in the dating service site and I was wondering if you had found someone to take care of your needs?”

Something changed in the tone of her voice.

“Okay, alright. No, you are actually the first person to call. I just put that ad in a few hours ago. The one before it didn't do so well, so I thought that I would make it a little bit clearer what I was looking for.”

“It seems pretty clear, but what exactly is it that you need protection from?”

“Well, it's actually a pretty long story and I don't want to scare you off, but long story short, I found some very valuable artifacts and I need to go get them.”

  “Where are they?”

“Where I buried them, hiding it from people that want them. And I kind of need it. Like really bad. I owe someone else money and they aren’t going to let it go and this is the only way I would be able to come up with it.”

  “That sounds pretty shifty.”

“It is, and it might be dangerous. well, it probably will be dangerous, and I want to make sure that I'm protected.”

It all just came rushing out of her and it took me a minute to realize that she was actually done talking. There seem to be ability to quickly explain it all, but I still didn't quite understand it.

“So, you need me to go with you to dig up some stuff?”

  “Yeah, basically.”

“And you're willing to give up your virginity for that?”

“Well yeah, I guess I am if I have to.”

  “But you don't want to?”

“No, not really. I just can't get anybody else to help me and if I get caught or if the artifacts get taken, these things are priceless and not only will I lose all that money, but you know, bad things will happen to me.”

“Then why go at all? Why not just cut your losses and walk away from the whole situation? If it's that dangerous, why would you risk it? You are young. You can just leave, and they wouldn’t find you.”

“Because, I don't have a choice. I have responsibilities, so I can’t just run off. I will admit that I want to, but I can’t.”

  “What do you mean?”

“Let's just say that I really need to get those artifacts. They are very important not just to my bottom-line, but to history and to the scientific field itself. You would be helping with that as well, not just me.”

“Those must be some pretty important things that you buried, if they can do all that.”

“Yes, very important. The fact of the matter is, I will do about anything to get them back. That’s how badly I need them.”

“How about you just pay with money, instead of your body?”

  She seemed relieved. “Really?”

“Yeah, I'm looking for money to pay bills, a little bit of human nookie, isn't going to do that for me.”

For a moment, it was like she was going to be defensive because of what I’d said, but then she agreed and said that as soon as we got the artifacts back, she could sell them. Things were already in place and Anna was confident she could pay me then. She wanted a number.

I told her I wasn’t sure, but gave her a ball-park figure. Anna said we could work something out.

“Very well then. I think we should meet, and you can tell me exactly what you need. It feels like there's more to the story then what you’re telling me.”

“You may be right. How about tomorrow?”

I agreed, tomorrow sounded good and I gave her the address of a place that I have been going to for years. I knew it inside and out, knew the neighborhood and I would know if anybody was there, that wasn’t supposed to be there.

“Ezz, you can't stay in here forever.”

“You say it like it's a challenge.

I had to press my lips together, because I wanted to say something that I knew I would regret later. I wanted to tell my brother that he needed to get the hell out of the house. How was he ever going to get better, if he was always hiding inside the house?

I couldn’t do that though. He was sensitive. Really sensitive, and he was the kind of sensitive that needed to talk to a therapist a few times a week and still it seemed like he had a lot more bad days than good, especially lately. I was of the impression that he just needed to get out, get some sunshine, a little vitamin D and he would start to feel better. It was depressing staying in the house all the time, even if he did say he liked it. I don't see how it was possible.

“I'm not challenging you to stay in the house more than you already do and you know it. Why don't you come with me? I have a quick thing I need to do across town, it could be fun.”

He just shook his head. “How in the world could you ever think that digging in the dirt was ever going to be fun? Sometimes I swear that we're not even related.”<

It wasn't the first time that I had heard it, but the fact was that we looked too similar for that to ever be an issue. He had the same raven black hair that I had and the same green eyes. Mine was a little bit longer and he was a little bit taller, but we even had much of the same build, slim and Ezekiel used to have the same humor as me as well.

Somewhere things went different though. We were a couple years apart and I don't really know what happened. One minute everything was fine, and the next it wasn't. He was just became more and more reclusive and now, I had to practically threatened, beg him to get out of the house. I just wanted to go back to the way things were, before he was like this.

“You know that we are, and if you don't agree, then look in the mirror. I'm serious though. You need to get out, so you can either come with me to the dig site, or we can get you out one of those websites so that you can meet people. I'm sure that there are plenty of people locally that you could have a good time with. Girls or boys.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“It doesn't mean anything. I don't know what it is you need. I don't know if you need a girlfriend, a boyfriend, a friend. You just need somebody else to talk to besides the doctor that is just trying to pick your brain clean and doesn't even seem to be helping.”

  “It's not Doctor Philips’s fault.”

I was getting frustrated. This was all on my head and it was like he wasn’t even trying.

“I'm not saying that it's anybody's fault. I'm just saying that you are getting out of the house.”

“Are you going to make me?”

“Yes, I'm your older sister and I will make you if I have to.”
